B-shift structure fire

B-shift had a working structure fire in a motel room downtown a few days ago. Upon dispatch it was reported that multiple victims were entrapped. Upon arrival of Bat-6 heavy fire was reported from one room. T-6 made a quick knock on this single room fire and confined it to the room of origin while R-6 forced adjacent doors and alerted occupants of the emergency. A second alarm was called and brought E-7 down to help with overhaul. Thanks to OCW E-3, OIFD E-4, MEFD E-11 for their help.

Car fire & Special Ops rope rescue on the A

NICEVILLE — A contractor working near a manhole fell into it Monday morning at around 11 a.m.

A group of 15 Okaloosa County special operations firefighters(FWBFD A-shift), trained in confined space rescue, assisted Niceville firefighters in the 45-minute rescue. The man was eventually removed from the hole via another underground exit by FF Morgan & FF Corrigan.

The man injured his ankle in the 20-foot fall and was taken to Twin Cities Hospital.

Also last shift T-6 had a small car fire and managed to get a couple of photos…

Submerged vehicle

At approximately 8am Monday July 12th, Engine Company 6 (Truck 6 out for repairs) and Battalion 6 were dispatched to a submerged vehicle at the Walkedge boat ramp off of Brooks st with unknown occupants inside.

Upon arrival crew reported a Cadillac Escalade approximately 150 foot off of the boat ramp. Firefighter Dan Corrigan entered the water and determined that the vehicle was unattended.

A recovery service was called and upon arrival then Firefighter Corrigan re-entered the water and prepared the vehicle for removal. A small group of onlookers observed as the vehicle was removed from the water. A neighbor reported hearing a splash at approximately 2am but did not investigate the cause.

MVA entrapment

C-shift Truck 2, Engine 7, Battalion 1 and Battalion 6 responded to a MVA at the interesection of 189 and 85 near Eglins main gate. A sandrail/dune buggy was approaching the intersection when the light changed and his brakes failed. This resulted in a T-bone collision with the sandrail driver suffering a broken leg and becoming trapped in the vehicle. The crews utilized the sawzall to cut away the bars to free the occupant who received ALS care while still in the vehicle.

Dwelling fires

Last 2 shifts have been busy ones with working dwelling fires on both the B & the A. E-7 & T-6 both assisted OCW on the B fire which was a commercial occupancy fire and the A which was a residential dwelling & just so happened to be during last nights City budget meeting. Battalion Chief/FF positions not cut

The City agreed to hold off on cuts to the Battalions & Firefighters and is willing to negotiate some other solutions. Hopefully we can work together to solve this ongoing budget issue. Check the story from the Daily news on Yesterdays meeting and the previous days demonstration to raise awareness of this budget meeting.

This meeting is a discussion on possible solutions to the current projected 1.7 M budget shortfall. Unfortunatly the FD manning is on the chopping block again. Our station 7 was not enough and now all 3 Battalion Chiefs are up for termination as well as the option of including 3 FF’s. Manning cuts are not the answer and we need your help to show up THIS TUESDAY @ 5PM at city hall.

NFPA study: Nearly all structure fire deaths happen in home fires

May 25,2010 – According to a new study, Home Structure Fires, from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), home fires account for 92 percent of fire deaths that occur in structures. These fires cause an average of 2,840 civilian deaths each year.

“This study strongly underscores the need to aggressively work to reduce the number of home fires in this country in order to save lives from fire,” said Lorraine Carli, vice president of communications.

During the period of 2003-2007, U.S. fire departments responded to approximately 380,000 home fires a year. These fires not only caused a large number of civilian deaths, they also caused an average of 13,160 reported civilian fire injuries and $6.4 billion in direct property damage.
